Healthcare Student Elective Itinerary

 Aim - To enable healthcare students to gain insight into the health care experiences of people living in a rural setting in Ghana, West Africa. You will stay at the beautiful ‘Africa Home Lodge,’ Meet Me There, Ghana. You will get a chance to meet local people and feel part of the community.

Four Week Typical Itinerary

Week One: Orientation to local community, working in the local health centre.

Week Two: Working in the local health centre.

Week Three: Placement in district hospital.

Week Four: Placement in district hospital.

 

Six Week Typical Itinerary

Week One: Orientation to local community, working in the local health centre.

Week Two: Working in the local health centre.

Weeks Three - Six: Placement in district hospital.

Weekends and Weeks One and Two resident at Meet Me There. Weeks Three and Four Keta accommodation. All weekends at Meet Me There.

Community Health Activities

Spend time with local guide to learn about village life.

Visit to local schools (in term time).

Visit community development projects, for example compost toilet building, wildlife conservation.

Visit alternative practitioner, (‘bone healer’).

Attend local religious services and ceremonies (Christian and Traditional).

Herbal medicine walk.

Visit other NGO's working in health care.

Placement at Local Health Centre, (Anyanui or Anloga).

Primary care services, (Working with Medical Assistant).

Community Outreach Visits, for example health education and childhood immunization.

Maternal and Child Health Services, including Antenatal Care and Delivery.

 

Placement at District Hospital.

Keta Hospital serves a population of 150,000 with 110 beds.

Services include maternal and child health, medicine and surgery, dentistry, eye clinic, general outpatients, operating theatres – suitable for medical, nursing and midwifery students.

There is a training school for certificate level nurses/assistant nurses which would no doubt welcome some teaching input/books/etc.

Volta River Boat Trip.

Slave Fort Visit.

Local Market Trips.

African Cooking Lessons.

Cultural Performances.

Drumming and Dancing.

 

COST for Four weeks: £1,100 - (Including £100 donation to Compost Toilet Building Project).

COST for Six weeks: £1250 - (Including £100 donation to Compost Toilet Building Project).

Price to Include:

Airport pickup and overnight stay in Accra.

Transport to Meet Me There from Accra.

Accommodation and three meals per day while on placement around Meet Me There and at Keta Hospital and during weekends at Meet Me There.

Support of Meet Me There volunteer co-ordinator.

Community guide when undertaking Community Health Activities.

Social and Cultural Activities as listed .

Return trip to Accra.

 

Not Included in the Price:

Drinks from the bar, snacks outside of meal times at Meet Me There.

Any additional trips.

Use of mobile internet, (when available).
